Well it’s taken a while to get around to this update... but it’s time we let you know about the Live & Unsigned Area Final result, which was that Rich unfortunately got eliminated. A big range of acts varying in age, quality and genre competed on the day in Portsmouth, and as the results were being announced, it soon became obvious that what Rich has to offer wasn’t what they were looking for. It came as a bit of a disappointment to start with, but a couple of hours later this was converted into a lesson in perspective and a good reminder that performing music is not about winning competitions or being “better” than other musicians. As a result Rich’s intention to connect and communicate with his audience has intensified, and his most recent performances both in the studio and live are giving testament to his refreshed attitude.

Rich is progressing with more recording at home, and down in London with friend and producer Darren Francis. Rich has such a back-log of material, that he’s almost reluctant to write anything new, but that’s happening too. Plans to make a video remain in place, although the original idea has been thrown out and they’re starting from scratch, scouting for locations and a suitable actress to play Rich’s love interest. If you have any ideas or suggestions for either, please email them to enquiries@richmaya.co.uk.

In the meantime, you can still see Rich playing gigs out and about, mostly in Bristol, as well as a couple of smaller festivals over the summer. And if you’re catching a cab in Wells you might just find yourself sat next to him, as he’s soon to be driving for local firm Cathedral Taxis!

Another intense day of competition took place on Saturday, as Rich staked his claim for a place in the Area Finals, playing a three and a half minute blend of “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” (Tears For Fears) and “Forgiveness” (Rich’s own song) in front of a panel of judges and a Guildhall full of music fans. At the end of an afternoon show that included 22 different acts, the judges made their announcements, and Rich was named in the top six acts to go through to the next round!

Two other rounds took place in Plymouth that day, and a total of 15 acts were selected to compete at the Area Finals, which will take place in Portsmouth at the Guildhall on 21st May. The same three and a half minutes will be allocated to each competitor to win over the judges for a place in the Live Fest National Grand Final to be held at the O2, London in front of a panel of top industry judges and a crowd including A&R from major labels. An opportunity that Rich is keen secure in Portsmouth.

You can help with this of course! Rich needs as much publicity as he can muster, and a coach-load of fans in Portsmouth would go a long way with him too! And while this success continues, so will the offer of a FREE E.P. with every ticket purchased to come and see Rich competing there. So please share Rich’s success with your network, call your newspapers and radio stations and tell them about this success story waiting to happen.

In order to consider both the environment and people’s pockets (given the price of petrol these days) there’s a discussion on Rich Maya Music on Facebook where you can either offer someone a space in your car, find one in someone-else’s, or maybe arrange for minibus or coach between you.

Finally, a word of thanks to Emma Britton for her ongoing support, and the interview and song play on Saturday morning. The interview starts around 1:47:30

This Sunday Rich went to Plymouth to audition for the UK Live & Unsigned competition www.liveandunsigned.uk.com. After a couple of hours hanging around nervously, he got his 2 minutes to impress the judges, and impress them he did. Complementing him on his beautiful voice, the judging panel awarded Rich a place in the Southwest regional final, to be held on the 19th March in Plymouth Guildhall. This places Rich amongst the best 40 of the hundreds of acts who turned up on the day, and puts him one step closer to playing at the Live & Unsigned Festival 2011 (the final round of the contest) and will be held at the O2 Arena in London. Tickets for the Regional Final will be available soon for just £7.50 each either through the website or via ticketmaster (link to follow soon).
